A non-review of the Kangertech NEBOX

I like Kangertech products! Really, I do. In my rotation, I have an older EVOD2 clearo, a T3'D clearo, a Aerotank Mini, a Subtank Mini V1, A Subtank V1, and a Subtank Plus. I've positively reviewed the KBox 40 W mod. I've given away about a dozen EVOD VV kits to smokers wanting to quit.

I should also say that I do not own the product I am writing about. In fact, I won't be buying one. What you're reading is just the inane, opinionated ramblings of one vaper that seriously believes that the future of vaping lies in open systems... Systems where you can choose the tank and you can choose the mod and you can choose the coil and you can choose the e-liquid.

That said...

Really, Kanger? A 60 Watt/TC, single 18650 box mod with an integrated 10 ml modified Subtank... There are so many things wrong with this concept that it baffles me...

Let's start at the beginning. No one that I know of wants to be locked into a tank. And, if that tank holds 10 ml of e-liquid, you're going to be locked in for a while. I have a hard time believing that the tank won't leak before it's emptied. I had a Big Kayfun that held 10 ml, and it ALWAYS started leaking before I was able to finish it off. I have a Big Buddha that holds 10 ml and it leaks, too, but as it uses e-liquid faster, I can typically get through it before the leaking becomes a problem. However, with both of those tanks, I was able to take the tank off of the mod and store it in such a manner that the leaking was minimized. This also means that you'll be locked into Kanger's coils - not the same coils available for use with the existing line of tanks - and Kanger's admittedly nice RBA deck. Further, in a day and age when every competitor on the market is offering a top-fill tank, Kanger is offering a bottom-fill tank that, although it has knurling, looks as though it needs a coin or other tool to access.

Secondly, I can barely get through six ml of e-liquid using a single 18650 VW/TC mod (I have the EHPro SPD A5 50 W TC, the SMY 60 TC Mini, a Hana DNA 40 clone, and a Geyscano to compare it to) before I have to charge or swap out batteries. A 10 ml tank paired with a six ml lifespan is just wrong.

Third, there's no adjustable airflow. I'm pretty sure that Kangertech heard the vaping crowd speak up on adjustable airflow. After all, they seriously increased the airflow between the original Subtank and the Subtank Mini V2/Subtank Plus.

It could be said that this is a tested and true model. After all, Joyetech succeeded with the eGrip line. So much so that they re-introduced it with a power boost to 30 watts and a screen. However, that mod is tiny, has enough battery life with the included battery to get through the included 3.6 ml tank. Oh, and it has a modicum (not enough, really, but...) of adjustable airflow. The Joyetech eGrip also offers some ease of filling, if not ease of cleaning, by putting a port on the side of the device. The NEBOX does not follow suit. Joyetech's offering is cute and stealthy, too. The NEBOX is anything but cute and stealthy.

There are a lot of boxes that this could have been modeled after and been a winner. The Innokin Itaste VTR and the Black Oak mechanical mod spring to mind...
Either one of these, updated of course, would have given Kangertech a solid piece of kit without forcing the user to ONLY use Kangertech coils even though many would have happily carried on and never bothered to upgrade or change. BUT, they would have had the option.

It looks nice. I'll give it that. The nice paint job and industrial design used on the SUBOX Mini and SUBOX Nano make this device a looker.

But, with limited battery life, limited power, and no choice in tanks, this is a non-starter that I will not be purchasing.

  1. Great review I may get one just to see. But all your points are well made. I guess we'll see how it does on release.!

    1. I decided to upgrade to the nebox after having an eleaf 30watt with Melo sub ohm tank for 6 months. After 4 days of use I can honestly say its brilliant. So Easy to use, no leaks, and great vapour production and taste. Still using the pre installed coil, and can't wait to try the others included. I use about 7ml a day so its great not having to keep messing around refilling which must been less chance of leakage. Metal body is very good, although top and bottom feels bit cheap as its plastic, but time will tell. All in all I'm very happy soo far.
Also if like me you may have had bad experiences with the old kanger coils like on the T3 etc so I was sceptical about going back to a kanger after being with aspire for so long. But these new coils are much much improved and so far the Langer vertical coils are performing much better than the aspire and eleaf coils.

  2. I can't see myself ever needing a ten mil tank, and certainly not one that is exclusive to the mod it's attached to. I also don't like the aesthetics of it.

  3. I have preordered one purely on the basis of it looking rugged enough for work usage, less chance for the tank to break or snap off than a standard mod with a stick up tank.Plus I am a Kanger fan.

    1. I'm a fan of Kanger, too. I just can't see this one being as big a runaway success as the Subang line. I'll be interested in hearing your feedback after you have it in hand.

  5. I work at a vape shop in columbus and we just got these in today. I've owned everything from an njoy e-cig to an ego-twist to different mechanicals and regulated boxes leading up to a snow wolf (not saying it's the best box ever made, just letting you know the spectrum of devices I've worked with through my vaping journey). The NEBOX is a really nice device for what it's worth. I picked one up with the intent of having a compact device with passthrough charging capability that still pushes a nice wattage/temp control range for a road trip I'm about to take.

Sure, the 10ml may not last one battery lifespan (depending on its mah), but you can switch out batteries for an instsnt full charge, because it's powered by an external 18650. The micro usb bypass allows you to vape on your device while it charges though, so a dead battery should never be an issue. The NEBOX hasn't leaked on me yet, will update if it does, and this device delivers a solid hit.

My only negative comments are that the coil is not interchangeable with the current subtank line, the airflow comes from underneath the tank (so the only way you can adjust it is by covering bits of it with your pinky), and that it is a fairly complicated interface to work with if you're brand new to vaping. Otherwise, solid device, recommend it to anyone who isn't intimidated by the interface.
    Also it looks sexy

    1. Very glad to hear that someone is happy with it. I just purchased an eNVy 22. This is a device that Kanger could have made. Should have made. https://youtu.be/oP0qJXcMkVo

  6. I also work in a vape shop close to Montreal, we got them today and it does leak on us from the airflow. We've been 3 cleaning it up and reassembling it but nothing to do, the 10 ml will bleed from the vent hole whatever we do.

    Any ideas?

    2. The vapor condensation from the chimney may be what is leaking out of the air hole. Try swabing it from the bottom with the "tanklid" off. On mine, the "tanklid" screw cranks down an additional 1/8th of a turn after 1 week, also there is a seal on the coil, after changing to a new coil (because I accidentally pulled the old one apart with a q-tip) and swabing out the chimney, no leaking. With all of that, I still love it: it fits in my girley-sized pocket and hits like gang-busters, yay!

    3. I am pretty new to vaping (Nov2015) I started with an Aspire (?) it was ok,, then I got a Nebox,, I love it. I have ran across a tad bit of leaking,, but every time it happened I seemed to be a bit thin on juice, too much PG. I aim for 50/50,, but I also dont 'exact mix/blend my flavors.. so over time my PG flavors can dilute the % of VG.. in a nutshell I re-mix my juice up to about 60% vg and everything clears up fine.

  7. White model just arrived in the post,30 mins ago.Easy to set up and go,though it does need a flat top 18650 so my Ipv is out of commision pending a replacement .It is smaller than I expected.fits my smallish hand well, comfortable to hold and not too heavy.Vapes well with an airy draw and good flavour, will report back if I have any leaking probs.Up to now very pleased as it will be great for work use as it seems more durable than a separate tank design,my main reason for purchase.Only slight nigle is the battery compartment brass threaded sealing cap doesn't seem too durable so I will be using the in device charging method the majority of the time. Will report back after further use.Up to now highly recommended as a rugged out and about mod.

  8. Reporting back about the white unit.24 hours later getting ready for my second battery recharge, which the supplied lead does quickly. Will leave it on for longer this time. It discharges a lot quicker than my Ipv(which I can get two days usage on one charge) which is a bit disappointing.I have dropped it to 20 watts, down from 25 to see if that makes much difference.I vape my Ivp at about 13 with Kanger and triton tanks that work just fine, that's too low with the Nebox though I haven't started fiddling withe the other variables yet.I have a 3000 Ma battery on the way which I hope will give me a day plus of usage,so thats a first note of diapointment ,will report back further. As a question hoe does the eNVy 22 fare on battery life?

    1. The 3000 mAh battery (I assume it's an LG HG2) will help a lot. Love those LG Chocolates.

I'll let you know how the eNVy 22 fares after it's arrived. FastTech is doing it's normal bang up job on speedy delivery... At a guess, though, it will be about as good as the 3000 mAh you've ordered as it only comes with an internal 3200 mAh LiPo

  9. I just picked up the White Edition yesterday. I must have completely overlooked the fact that the tank is PC. I see a long list of juices NOT to use, but can anyone recommend a good juice that is SAFE for PC tanks?

    1. Avoid most anything with citrus or cinnamon. You can work a little Google Fu and search "Tank Crackers" and you'll find that a lot of e-liquid manufacturers already label their e-liquids as tank crackers, so it should be relatively easy to avoid.

  10. Back about the white, new 3000 battery has lasted about 12 hours on a single charge, more than enough for a day at work as its a break only vape job,so the mod is perfect for its main use.I would have liked better battery life though. It consumes liquid fairly quickly,as expected.Refilling, which is slow, needs lots of light as the atty is a long dark deep hole, perhaps a syringe would be a good idea.Had a small leak after first top up due to not checking aty being firmly screwed in,seems to happen a lot with my Kanger gear, coil unscrewing when basw removed.Had a suspect small leak on the third night ,but not sure that wasnt due to one of the clutter of small tanks on my desk, surrounded by chaos to either side of my keyboard.Off to the homeland tomorrow ,will report further on return.Flavour and hit still good and plenty of clouds, will continue to use the strawberry till it runs out and then change to blueberry.B plus for an out and about mod B minus for a one and only mod,up to now.

It has nothing to do with the structure of the bottom cap. My cap is just fine. Its the heads that are causing all the problems. I put in now 6ml juices and no leaking till i finish vaping up all my juices...email me at jcem2989@yahoo.com.sg will send pics on how i fixed mine.

I fixed my leaking by pressing it in a vice so i no longer have a little lip near the mouth piece it is flush now I reckon its a manufacturing issue as it pushed the tube inside down meaning it's further into the coil and straight hope this helps whoever tries it holds a full 10ml now with no leaking

  13. Leak? It does.Back from my hols with the white one.Fullish tank constant use,no leak.Same tank state left overnight ,small puddle, nearer empty tank small weep that does not escape the air hole.Problem solved by storing it upside down,no leaks.I suspect this will vary between atys and will report back on any variation.Great driving mod for me as it fits nicely into the well of my cars door grip.Still giving a good airy cool vape.Unless it gushes with aty change its still fit for use for me,wouldnt recomend it as a one and only device though.Just won an eNVy 22 on E Bay,more news to come.

  14. TBH, your comments are harsh, especially you did not have the product in hand. I have 3 mods now : ipv d2 + sub tank mini, subox and this. And my go to now is this. Flavor wise a little bit below d2 but d2 is pain in the butt when it comes to recharging as it require special cable.

Now let me comments on your observation on this mod:
    1. Mine does not leak. Those that leak simply got a lemon. End of the story
    2. Ever heard of power bank? When the battery died, I just plug it to powerbank and vape away. Simple as that
    3. Not everyone give a damn about tank switching, at least I dont.
    4. Not everyone also give a damn about adjustable airflow. Some other review already stated that this is not suitable for mouth to lung vaper. I for one certainly dont care
    5. It is as sexy as it could be and as stealthy as it could be as well.

Cleaning the tank is not difficult once you know how. I take off the cover, pressed the opening against a faucet, ran the water fr like 5 seconds and its done. Dry it with cotton buds. And youre ready to go again.

My only biggest gripe is plastic tank. Kanger needs to explain why plastic and not glass to the community.

For the price of $50 at some website, this is a very good alternative for people thats looking for convenience and style.

    1. You're right. My comments were harsh and I did not have one in hand. I was only stating my opinions about a device that I think is fundamentally flawed. With more than 40 devices and around 80 atomizers, i can say that I've done due diligence here... again, though, this is just my opinion. But, let's cover a few of the points you've made.
      1. People paid $50 for a lemon... a lot if people... from Kanger, this is not acceptable.
      2. Power bank? Sure... got one for my phone. However, now you're carrying your mod, a power bank and a cable. Kinda shoots the all-in-one stealth vape idea in the foot.
      3. Not giving a damn about switching tanks is fine... until you grow tired of a flavor, or run out of Kanger coils away from home and the first vape shop you come to only has Atlantis...
      4. Tell that to a person wanting mouth to lung. This device ignore a serious segment of the vaping population by being lung inhale only.
      5. Sexy, yes. Kanger knows how to make a good looking mod. Stealthy? I've got a 60 watt TC with a Goblin Mini that takes up way less space (holds less, too). I have the eGrip OLED 30 watt, adjustable airflow, and half the size. I have the eGo ONE mini. Dinky! There are stealthily vapes. Further, being stealthy also refers to the vapor produced. A subohm coil with a direct lung hit is not gonna be terribly stealthy.

  15. Will the older square coils work with this?

  16. I like this alot. I work outdoors and need something that is compact. I had the old egrip and found it quite lacking. With this I dont worry about running out of juice for the day and the battery (imren 2500mah) will last all day. The flavor and clouds are good. I havent had a problem with it leaking but im using the RBA head with a fused Clapton nichrome80 28/38 and 4 wraps. Its quite nice and convenient. But would I have bought it if I didnt need it for work purposes? No. But I wouldn't buy a subtank either.

  17. Bro you are tripping the Nebox is amazing I have been vaping for almost two years and in that time I have put down my dropper for two things and that's the Nebox and my TFV4. It's a perfect device for experienced vapers as well as beginners it has a large capacity if you need it which most beginers would because they only use one juice if you don't use 10 ml here's a solution don't fill it out in what you need

  18. Back about the white one.Did my first drop test,3 foot drop onto a slate floor(it landed on its flat side) and no damage or marks.Top marks for durability.I suspect that Kanger went for the plastic tank for durability / production cost reasons.Still happy with my purchase.
I have received my E Bay eNVy 22 in the post, but all I will say until you review it is that would buy a new one if I lost it, but not so the Nebox.

  19. Just got my Nebox and it started leaking. I swapped out the coil for the standard square nickel OCC so we'll see how it does. So far no leaking. I've heard the new round coils are the problem. Great taste, nice clouds, looks and feels nice too! I'll update after a couple days of use.

    2. I've had the Nebox for little over a month now. I've used the included Nickel SSOCC 0.15 and the standard 0.5 kanthal coil. Neither have leaked a drop... EXCEPT! Once. I know this sounds simple and stupid and I'm not trying to talk to you or anyone like they're dumb, but..
When you goto fill your tank, sometimes the coil will back out of the bottom hardware. Usually so little its not noticeable, unless you physical check it. So make sure to check the tightness of the coil into your bottom hardware and adjust accordingly. I'm curious to hear your results. Get back to me if you get time.

  21. I started small, tried Njoy and Blu (nope and nope) used an ego-t for a bit and it was okay, but still not satisfying like a cigarette. Had this for about a week and a half now and I LOVE it. I work 24hr shifts on an ambulance so it's small and ruggedish, fits in pockets and has a large capacity. No leaks or anything yet.

  22. On a Nebox leaking note:
I've been using my Nebox for almost a month now and I have had a few issues with leaking as well. A couple of things I have found out along the way to help resolve the leaking issues would be A) really crank down on the coils when screwing them into the cap (seems to be the only way to seal it properly) and don't worry about the coil becoming too hard to unscrew when it comes time to replace. B) LAY THE NEBOX ON ITS SIDE! This was the ah-hah! moment for when when it came to big leaking problems. I have found I can leave it sitting vertical while it is not charging and have no problems but when it comes to charging the Nebox heats up and things expand and this is where my big leaking problems occurred. ALWAYS charge the Nebox laying on its side or even upside down if you have to. Now that I have started following these two simple steps I have had no leaking issues what so ever. Love my Nebox! I have been smoking for 7 years and I am now going on one month without a single cancer stick.

  23. I love my Nebox. Been using it for one month now and haven't had any leaking issues at all. If I had any complaint, it's the battery cover. What a pain. If they had made it in such a way where it was knurled like the tank cover (or a "grippy"-type surface) where you could do it with the supplied "coin" (or a real one), that would have been a bonus. But it flat out sucks. I like the big 10ml tank, but to each his own. This is my 3rd Kanger device, and I haven't had any trouble with any of them.

  28. My Nebox started leaking from the bottom like crazy within a month of use, & since I was not about to shell out $60+ for a new set up, I took to Google for a hoping to find a solution.

After trying a bunch of sh*t that ultimately didn't work, I finally came across this easy fix that's worked like a charm ever since:

    https://youtu.be/w9oveai_e70

While it will still sometimes leak a little bit here and there (usually if the coil is loose or I haven't screwed the bottom on tight enough after refilling), it doesn't happen very often :)
